Where'd you hear that using dye will turn it red? That's BLEACH, sweetie. Just buy the dye and use it. I dyed my naturally black hair with a similar color dye and it turned the color on the box. Just make sure the dye is permanent, or it won't do anything.

If you have a lot of natural red undertones, I would go with an ash brown color. I have red undertones too and the ash brown makes my hair the perfect color of brown without any red.
