Help with dying my hair red?

I want my hair to be the exact color of Lauren Ambrose on Six Feet Under; here is a picture: http://www.hbo.com/sixfeetunder/artwork/...

My hair is naturally reddish brown, but it's a little darker than Lauren's. I already dyed it once, with a color that looked the same (or maybe a little brighter) as Lauren's. I left it on the recommended time, but it turned my hair lighter than my natural color (and what I want it to be) in the root area, but darker than I want it on the bottom. How do I get it to look exactly like the picture? Should I dye it again with the same color, or a different color?

Any help would be appreciated.

I would suggest dying it that same color, if you do it a second time it will likely even out a little better. Good luck!

Reds are one of the hardest colors to put on and to take off. I was red for many years and always had the red done at a salon. Ive been brown, blonde, and black too - and I felt fine doing those at home... but there is something about red shades that is harder to blend with your natural shade to get the tone you want.

Your color was lighter at the roots because the heat of your scalp speeded up the processing of the peroxide in the product...the ends were probably darker because they were porous from being previously processed, even just by sun/ chlorinated water etc.

Red tones are the most difficult to get right, and I would consider a visit to a good colorist, it's a worthwhile investment.

firstly, color will not lift any other artificial color only bleach can do that... sorry... don't bother apply more color it will only deepen it and probably damage it

wait a month or so before attempting a change... thankfully red tints fade very quickly.. to hasten the process wash the hair often in warm water... I have heard that dishwashing liquid can speed up the process but i think that may be a little harsh on the hair...

the key to that haircolor is the level of lightness... her base is a blonde shade, whether she is a natural strawberry blonde or brownish blonde doesn't matter... I would hazard a guess that her tone is a level 7 or 8 which is pretty light... if your hair is a natural level 5 or darker then you can not achieve that color without pre bleaching anyway...

sounding complicated yet?... while haircolor is scientifically simple to achieve special tones take expertise...

the only other thing that I can suggest it for you to paint in some highlights if you don't want to go through all the above mentioned steps... doing this may break up the darker tones enough to blend it to trick the eye... you have to be careful of whatever other chemicals may be on the lengths of your hair... just because something has faded doesn't mean it hasn't permanently changed the color or integrity of the hair

good luck
